Will read this with a greater attention to detail in the morning; it’s quite late. But this comment and Gerard Mclean ‘s below reminded me of my #3 (which wasn’t actually world hunger, though still WTF)…i forgot while writing numbers 1 & 2…

Thin Man , earlier this year, my mother went to use her credit card. Not her bank card, but her credit card. It was declined, which was clearly a mistake, as she and my dad keep it paid off. She was at the store, though, so she went over to the ATM to withdraw from her account. It was pretty much at a zero balance.

Someone had obtained my parents’ information and maxed out the card ($36,000) then used their savings account to pay the balance and then some ( I assume to run it up again). The bank’s algorithmic genius didn’t find it odd that this account suddenly just dried up. The credit card company had just put a flag on the account, but not called my parents. I guess the decline was her notification of major fuckery being afoot.

Long story short, the card company took care of it as it was obviously fraud. No idea what happened on the legal end of things, but my mom had only used that card to purchase a new computer at Best Buy in the last 6 months or so, so they had a pretty good idea where to start looking, i suppose.

She’ll never feel financially safe again. Assholes.

BACK TO THE THIRD THING…

#3 was required information that there was no need to know. I just moved. When I brought in my completed application to one of the agencies, they asked for (required) a photocopy of my SS card (I refused), i was told the rental agency would not rent to me without my SS card. Not just the number, but the CARD.

And, my CHILDREN’S SS cards. I raised holy Hell, and demanded an explanation for such a ridiculous request. They had my driver’s license and my tribal ID, both recognized as primary sources of identification for everything except for obtaining an initial state ID, which i obtained in 1984. I CAN ACTUALLY USE MY ID TO OBTAIN A SOCIAL SECURITY CARD.

My children don’t have income, so no idea what that was about.

No one could give a single reason. Not one. Nothing beyond “It’s just something we require, ma’am.”

THAT is my biggest pet peeve. If you’re going to do something, at least know why you’re doing it. If you always do what you always did just because it’s the way you always did it…well…you’re a freaking idiot. That’s all.

I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but I know I want it to be spelled right and punctuated correctly. I guess that’s something.
