This is the whole problem with the educational system in general. We are raising TEST TAKERS. Either successful test takers, or unsuccessful test takers. Starting in KINDERGARTEN. There used to be time for empathy. There used to be money for shop, and home ec, and music and sports. But now your kid can only do that stuff if YOU can pay for it. Otherwise it’s off the table and you are test prep, all day long.
And then for 5 hours of homework every night. My kids' district assigns a required science fair project OVER SPRING BREAK because “they don’t have time to do it in class”.
While I think reading and writing and 'rithmatic are invaluable and necessary life skills, you are right. For the great majority of our kids, higher mathematics are almost always unnecessary. Kids should be able to understand basic measurements , how to make change , and how to keep track of their spending and earning and know the relationship between the two.
And those things are learned by experiencing them.
I’m sorry you fell through the cracks. I’m glad you found your answer. But just to be clear; you were not totally dropped. Because somewhere along the way, YOU DID LEARN THE IMPORTANT STUFF.
So, that’s something.
Because what do they say? Only the devil would put the alphabet into math.
