Thank you for sharing your story. I have been to 4 West twice (that’s the mental health wing of our local hospital), both times were ‘voluntary’ but more like ‘voluntold’ by my ex-husband.
I don’t know what that other guy’s issue was, but I’m thinking that maybe you got some shit because you spoke in the sort of tone that you learn in there, because in there, you realize (usually for the first time) that most of the people in there with you are just people with problems, like everyone else in the world. But to someone who doesn’t know any better, they think committed to a mental facility and it brings pictures of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Nurse Ratchett.
It’s important for people like us to tell our stories, because you’re right: stigmatization has to stop. About 1 in 4 American adults has a diagnosable mental disorder. Add in teens and the number is even higher. To just automatically categorize a quarter of the population as crazy is, well…crazy.
