Playing an instrument is amazing. Though for me, it’s more that learning to play allowed me to understand different things about music. The way chords come together. The reason an artist will put certain clashing notes together. And terms. ( because, words)…Fortissimo! Pianissimo…crescendo!

Staccato

Legatto

Vibrato

I love musical words.

And once you can play SOMETHING, with a little help, you can play ANYTHING.

I attended my daughter’s jazz trombone recital yesterday. She’s learning to improvise. She started on drums, 5 years ago. Middle school didn’t have room for all the percussionists to play every piece, so she was bored and decided she wanted to learn a second instrument so she could play all the songs.

So, trombone.

Turns out she’s quite gifted and has fallen in love with music. Since the trombone, shes taught herself to play keyboards, using both hands (lol I could never get them to work together), reading both musical clefts.

She amazes me. But it all started with her learning to read music.

I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but I know I want it to be spelled right and punctuated correctly. I guess that’s something.
