My daughter returned last night from a vacation with her dad and brother. She is 14, and recently started menstruating. She’s never used a tampon despite my pleas and of course, when she was in swimming territory ( it’s not warm enough where we live) she got her period. I could not, over the phone, convince her to try tampons and she spent her entire trip out of the water. She loves to swim.

Her father was no help. He has nothing to do with “female stuff”. Her step mom tried, bless her heart. But somehow, we got to 2016 and my kid is just as embarrassed to bleed as I was in 1989 and my mom was in 1963.

It’s heartbreaking and infuriating.
