LIGHT UP MEDIUM, LIGHT UP THE WORLD

DAY 5

Affirmation: May I always counter darkness with the light of my being, and may every beam of light I part with
In turn lighten my mood, my step, and my burdens.

Winter is upon us in Alaska. I knew it when I left for work and had to wait 10 minutes to defrost my car. I knew it when I looked out at the Chugach Mountains during my commute at the termination dust that had doubled overnight. But mostly, I knew it because the Northern Lights came out to play.

The lights weren’t as spectacular as they were the night this photo was taken; at least not from the city of Anchorage. The photo is from Fairbanks (where I lived for 6 years), where the air is colder and crisper and the lights of town don’t burn quite as brightly.

Tremaine L. Loadholt , If you haven’t experienced the Auroras (either one), it should really be on your bucket list . It’s one of my best memories of childhood — being awakened in the middle of the night in the middle of winter because “THE LIGHTS ARE OUT!”.

We would wander out and stand in the middle of our street in our pajamas, along with all of our neighbors. No one spoke, but you could see us all breathing. Everyone’s house lights were turned off, and the Northern Lights would cast a glow over us as they danced.

They were pretty tonight. It’s early in the season, so we aren’t as cold or as dark as we’ll get. The lights are only going to get better. But tonight they danced, like they are in the picture.

And I thought of all of you..of how that was us, dancing, lighting up the entire sky.

I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but I know I want it to be spelled right and punctuated correctly. I guess that’s something.
