It’s actually projection ( I’m going to tell you that you are doing what I am actually doing, and hopefully because you are a better person than I am, i.e. you give a shit about how you affect people, you will sacrifice your position and allow me to continue with the behavior).

I think gaslighting is sorta a long term abuse tactic so it isn’t as easy to pull that one on strangers.
