I’d like to second H. Nemesis Nyx here, as a pub editor. When I came to Medium, before I wrote a story, I responded to one. A publication emailed and asked to publish my response. In fact, the first three published items I had here happened by request. And I’m no Hemingway. In fact, the first publication I submitted to was the one I currently edit for.

I think that a couple of the pubs I submitted to looked at numbers; as an editor, that is something that has honestly never occurred to me.

Granted, I am sure the more tightly niched pubs have more selective criteria based on that niche (a sci-fi pub is going to expect sci-fi, The Weekly Knob will require your submission follow its guidelines and weekly prompt…) but many publications are more general than that.

I agree it’s good to have a few publications you regularly submit to, though.

I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but I know I want it to be spelled right and punctuated correctly. I guess that’s something.
