I had been feeling the pull of not voting this election as well, and only changed my mind in the last few days.

I’m part Cherokee Indian. I don’t culturally identify a whole lot with that part of my heritage, but living in Alaska, and in rural Alaska in particular, I have walked through my fair share of native Alaskan deaths that occurred under suspicious circumstances, and while I can’t firsthand identify with what it’s like to live black in America, I can and do identify with the stereotypes and biases that come with being a Native American in America, and my heart breaks for Renee Davis, her children, and her child that will never be born.

And it must be infuriating to be associated with a media system that is more focused on Donald Trump’s latest sexual escapade than on the outrageousness that is a suicidal young woman being murdered by those sent to protect her. I’m sorry.

I did decide, just yesterday, to vote. A lot of it had to do with what I present to my children. I fully get not voting, and I support your choice not to be a party to electing either candidate on Tuesday.

I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but I know I want it to be spelled right and punctuated correctly. I guess that’s something.
