Let’s conserve the traditions and beliefs that uplift us, that do something positive for “us” as a nation, a civilisation, or a species. But let’s rip out, shred, and burn to cinders every single “tradition” that has the primary effect of oppressing people who individually have done no wrong.
I couldn’t agree with you more. The problem is that not everyone agrees upon what those traditions and beliefs are. If we did, this wouldn’t be happening, and everyone would be regarded the same as everyone else. And like i’ve said before, we can enact all sorts of laws but we cannot change people’s hearts if they don’t want to be changed. So we keep trying to teach our children better so that we can at least move in the right direction…so that hopefully the last person holding on to bigotry and oppression eventually dies in his sleep and the world can move forward without all this silliness.
About your initial question, when I say equality i refer to opportunity; but genuine equal opportunity, not lipservice; not something that can be loopholed out of. And before THAT comes, the systemic BELIEF that everyone deserves equal opportunities must override systemic racism and sexism and GOD WHEN IS THAT GOING TO FINALLY HAPPEN???
People should want to give everyone the same consideration without a bunch of laws saying they have to.
