I concur. The best defense is not always a good offense.

Honestly-there are times to speak up, but in most situations, I’ve learned that completely ignoring drama ( EVEN IF IT IS DIRECTLY AIMED IN MY DIRECTION) is the best way to make it go away.

If you refuse to engage, the attacker has nothing left to attack. If he/she is persistent and you are silent, it doesn’t take long for that person to look like a fool.

Unfortunately, it is our nature to fire back. For me, it’s when someone I care about is targeted.

Know your hot buttons.

Know not to take things personally. Even if you are clearly at the receiving end of an attack clearly meant to be personal.

It can’t be personal, because no one who knows you as a person would do such a thing. It just FEELS personal.

Know the difference between someone who disagrees with your view and is interested in having a grown up discussion about the difference of opinion, and someone who doesn’t care about your opinion and is attacking it just to start a fight.

The second one won’t be interested in hearing anything you have to say. They will just keep bulldozing you for as long as you engage.

Know that this is not a “Medium” problem. It is a societal one and it happens in every online forum in varying degrees.

It is unfortunate. But if we keep our senses and keep to general privacy standards for ourselves, we should be able to cultivate a community of mutual respect and honest communication. Trolls will come and go. We just need to protect one another.

I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but I know I want it to be spelled right and punctuated correctly. I guess that’s something.
