Hey nderground :) I just wanted to point out (because this is what I used to think, as well) that you have to be very careful about antisocial personality disorder behavior classifications — sociopathy and psychopathy — Both can have definite narcissistic traits, or Narcissistic Personality Disorder…or they may not. But both are manifestations (and not super well defined) of APD. NPD and APD are both cluster B disorders and have many things in common. But sociopaths are usually environmentally created while psychopaths generally are considered “born that way” or found to have abnormal brains; so, an organic cause. And interestingly, though sociopath seems to carry less of a stigma, it is in fact the manifestation of the disorder that is more indicative of the more damaging behavior; more socially erratic, less able to function in society, etc. Psychopaths are often successful businessmen. They are able to fake emotion, but they don’t feel it. They can charm, or mirror another person’s expressions well enough to ‘pass’ as a “great guy”.
I can’t diagnose either guy; not really. But i have a hard time thinking a sociopath would be able to gain so much popularity. Even a narcissistic one.
anyway, don’t know why i felt the need to respond here except that i am always trying to nail down the differences and never quite get it right. thought i’d try again. :) thanks.
