God forbid you are ever the victim of a catastrophic, life-altering event beyond your control that renders you unable to make your mortgage payment and someone like you is in the position to decide your fate. Good thing your home wasn’t sitting in New Orleans when Katrina came a’calling.
How do you suppose someone already barely getting by (because we can’t all be millionaires) picks themselves up from something like that? A woman, let’s say...
Add to the loss of her home the fact that her child drowned. Now she has to navigate the beaurocracy of rebuilding and the grief of losing a child and pull herself back up.
Now, this childless mother, while looking for a new home, has to sleep somewhere in the interim and all there is is the shelter, where she’s raped. Another nail in her coffin.
And everyone in her support system is going through different versions of the same thing. She can’t lean on those people, but everywhere she tries to turn, there you are doing whatever you can to stomp out any little comfort or help that is available, because fuck her, its her own damned fault she ended up where she did.
If you truly believe every person without a home deserves to be that way, you’re really not paying attention at all.
I sincerely hope you, too, receive all that you deserve.
Peace to you.
