Firstly, I have no idea what my computer just did. I did not mean to highlight the word “conversantly”. Sorry.
Secondly, I was not the “churchy” one, or trying to reason with anyone about religion (nor do I believe the author was doing that, hence the disclaimer), but I imagine it’s like most things in life requiring a vast knowledge base. When a line from any ideology is pulled alone for the purpose of inspiring or condemning or even just informing, the risk of misinterpretation is high.
I’ll admit that religious doctrine is used, accidentally and on purpose both, out of context and/or incorrectly possibly more often than it’s used correctly. It’s very easy to pull a verse that seems to make the point one wishes to make, while ignoring the fact that the surrounding, accompanying verses change its intended meaning completely.
I see it all the time.
I’m sure I’ve done it a time or two myself, though I rarely quote scripture.
