…hen the military draft was ended and Vietnam War protests flicked off like clicking a light switch. It is all but impossible to overstate the role of Vietnam in shaping the right-wing’s hatred of liberals.
Could you explain this statement to me? My father, a Vietnam vet, died in March. He refused to speak of the war but our lives were awash in the aftermath of it. I hated it so much without really understanding why and am only recently reading about that time in history.
What about it shaped the right wing’s hatred of liberals? Are you referring to the way the soldiers were treated upon arriving back home?
I know that homecoming had a lot to do with who my father shaped up to be. Mom always said it broke him. Broke his heart. Coming home from where they told him to be only to be ridiculed and harassed and the object of so much rage.
It breaks my heart still thinking of my 22 year old father coming home, still seeing some possibility in the world, and having it stomped out of him.
I promise, we all paid dearly for that in my house.
I appreciate your explanation in advance. ☺
