All I know is that I remember my parents being Democrats, and I turned 18, and when I registered to vote, I registered as a Democrat. It was like being a Baptist because that’s what my folks were.

Then I went to college and started reading more about party affiliation and realized I didn’t have much in common with either. I live in Alaska; we have a pretty significant Independent population. I was 19 and idealistic and I changed my registration posthaste. It was 1992. I remained a registered Independent until the Primary election. In Alaska, to vote in the Primary you must be registered for the Party you’re voting for. I wanted to vote for Bernie, so I changed my affiliation again, back to Democrat and I’ve kept it this way since, mostly because I know the state is backed up processing voter registrations right now and also I’m lazy. But this reminded me it’s time to revert to my party again.

My parents were proud Democrats. My mom says now she doesn’t even recognize the Party anymore.

I still don’t know what I want to be when I grow up, but I know I want it to be spelled right and punctuated correctly. I guess that’s something.
