Actually that’s interesting, for
I TOO BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE
imagine that.
I lived in a house with some very devout Christians for a while and took to saying, “Praise Jesus!” when something good would happen. So Jeff (the jerk) in the beginning said, I can only think of one thing that might be a problem for us going forward. I’m an atheist and you obviously are religious.”
And I laughed, and I laughed. And I said, “The Praise Jesus thing? I could just as easily have said, “Praise oak trees!” or “Praise Sunshine!” or Praise those sweet newborns over in the hospital nursery”.
I don’t believe in God in the traditional sense of the word, but it’s an easy, universal word to use so that everyone knows what I’m talking about when I talk about spirituality. It was raining yesterday.
All I know is,
I didn’t make it rain.
I think the bible is a book full of someone’s truth, the way they saw it (many someones…). It’s stories that make a map of the way people believed other people should live, and it has good and it has bad. And i believe it’s okay if you believe differently about that than I do. Because MY god would never cast anyone out for not believing the same as someone else. and MY god is inclusive and loves me even when i do really stupid stuff.
I believe in something bigger than myself because the thought that I am at the top of this thing is too frightening to even entertain.
I give that something characteristics because I was instructed to in recovery. To “design my own higher power” so to speak.
So, I did. :)
